Israel is at war with Hamas after unprecedented attacks
The conflict between Israel and Hamas began in 2007, when Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip from the Palestinian Authority. Hamas has since fired thousands of rockets at Israel, and Israel has responded with airstrikes and ground invasions.
The current conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a large-scale offensive against Israel. Hamas militants broke through the Gaza-Israel barrier and entered Israeli territory. Israeli forces have been fighting to drive the militants back.
The conflict has caused widespread death and destruction. As of October 8, 2023, at least 370 Palestinians and 50 Israelis have been killed.
The international community has called for a ceasefire, but both sides have refused to comply. The conflict is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.
