Adopted in 2004, the state flag of Georgia is a red-white-red triband with a blue canton containing the state coat of arms. The coat of arms features an arch symbolizing the state’s constitution, three pillars representing the three branches of government, and the words “Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation.” The circle of 13 white stars surrounding the coat of arms represents Georgia as one of the original Thirteen Colonies.
The flag was adopted in 2004 after a statewide referendum. The previous flag, which had been in use since 1956, was controversial due to its similarity to the Confederate battle flag. The new flag was designed to be more inclusive and to represent all Georgians.
