Mexican Flag History
Throughout the War of Independence from Spain, Mexico utilized various flag designs to represent their nation. Though not officially sanctioned, the first national flag was considered to be the Virgin of Guadalupe standard carried by Miguel Hidalgo and associated with the rebel army. Additional flags were used during the war, including one from the Army of the Three Guarantees featuring green, white, and red stripes, reminiscent of France’s flag. In 1821, Mexico’s first official national flag was established, depicting the tricolor design with the country’s coat of arms in the center. This emblem was later modified in 1823, removing the crown from the eagle’s head and incorporating a serpent and branches. This design was used until the formation of the first federal republic in 1864. The Second Mexican Empire then adopted a similar tricolor pattern with four eagles and crowns in each corner.
