The Battle That Broke the British

March 1781. At Guilford Courthouse, North Carolina, American General Greene faced Cornwallis in two and a half hours of ferocious combat. The British won the field — but at catastrophic cost. Cornwallis lost 25% of his troops, ran out of supplies, and lost control of the Carolinas. He marched to Yorktown. Seven months later, he surrendered. The war was over.

As British statesman Charles James Fox put it: “Another such victory would ruin the British army.”
