The Story Behind the Flag
In October 1775, Colonel Joseph Reed wrote to General Washington: “What do you think of a flag with a white ground and a tree in the middle, the motto ‘AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN’ — this is the flag of our floating batteries.”
Washington’s men were outnumbered, outgunned, and facing the most powerful navy on earth. They hoisted this flag anyway — a declaration that their cause was just, their rights were God-given, and no earthly power could take them away. By February 1776, six armed vessels of the United Colonies flew it. The Massachusetts council later formalized it as the official colors of the sea service.
Today it remains a symbol embraced by Americans who believe in constitutional liberty, limited government, and the enduring principles of the founding. It is also the historical flag of the Vermont National Guard.
