The Philadelphia Light Horse Cavalry was the first military unit to fly a flag featuring the thirteen stripes of the American Colonies. Formed in November 1774, the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry was established to resist British rule and carry out the resolutions of the Continental Congress — making this flag one of the most historically significant banners of the American Revolution.
History
The First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry is the oldest mounted military unit in the United States, and may be the oldest American military force of any kind in continuous service. The unit fought throughout the Revolutionary War and has served the nation ever since — seeing action in the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, World War I (including the Argonne Forest), and World War II. In more recent decades, the unit served in Bosnia and supported Operation Enduring Freedom in Kuwait. Since 9/11, it has been one of the most deployed units in the U.S. Army.
