The Defiant History of the Serapis Flag
At the legendary 1779 Battle of Flamborough Head, U.S. Navy Captain John Paul Jones famously uttered “I have not yet begun to fight!” while successfully capturing the British frigate HMS Serapis. During the brutal engagement, his own ship, the Bonhomme Richard, tragically sank, taking her American ensign down with her into the sea.
Jones sailed the captured Serapis into the neutral Dutch port of Texel for repairs. However, British officials fiercely argued that Jones was legally a pirate, as he sailed a captured warship flying no recognized national colors. To protect the American fleet, Dutch officials quickly constructed an ensign based entirely on a letter sent by Benjamin Franklin and John Adams to the French Ambassador, describing the new United States flag as having “thirteen stripes, alternately red, white, and blue; a small square… a blue field, with thirteen white stars.” The unique resulting pattern—with its alternating blue, red, and white stripes and atypical 8-pointed stars—became a permanent symbol of American resourcefulness and tactical defiance.
