Authentic cotton flag. 2nd Georgia Regiment. Civil war confederate flag.

6 POINTED STARS.

This flag was used by the Confederate 2nd Georgia Infantry. It is in the Confederate 1st National design, but had six-pointed stars. It was carried into some of the major battles of the War Between the States: Manassas, Antietam, Gettysburg, Petersburg, Fredericksburg, Chickamauga and finally Appomattox (at the end of Appomattox the 2nd counted12 officers and 146 men). A notable engagement of the 2nd during Antietam is known as the Burnside Bridge battle. Less than 500 Georgians held back Union General Burnside’s 14,000 men for four hours, preventing them from crossing a bridge. After the war, the flag was returned to Burke County, Ga. The eight Georgia ladies who made the flag were Sallie Jones, Sallie Blount, Vic Warner, Julia Blount, Lattie Carter, Annie Mandell, Florence Lyne and Sarah Whitehead. When the ladies presented the flag to the regiment, in May 1861, Captain William R. Holmes remarked, “This flag shall be our rallying point around which every sharpshooter will claim no greater honor than to protect and defend.”
