The Confederate First National Flag first raised at the inauguration of President Jefferson Davis on March 4th. At that time 7 states had seceded from the Union, so the flag displayed 7 stars in a circle. As more states seceded, stars were added. Eleven states officially seceded, but 13 states in all were admitted to the Confederacy. Missouri and Kentucky had enough support for secession that renegade state legislatures were formed and announced separation from the Union. Because of that, the Confederate government formally admitted Missouri and Kentucky. With Kentucky’s admission to the Confederacy the First National grew to 13 stars as of December of 1861. This flag is also called the Stars and Bars. While that term is sometimes used by folks today to indicate the Confederate Battle Flag, Confederate soldiers referred to that distinctive flag as the Southern Cross.
