September 11–14, 2025
Official Presidential Proclamation
In accordance with the President’s proclamation:
-
Patriot Day (September 11, 2025): All United States flags are to be flown at half-staff today in remembrance of the victims of the September 11 attacks.
-
Honoring Charlie Kirk: The President has further ordered that U.S. flags remain at half-staff nationwide until sunset, September 14, 2025, as a mark of respect for Charlie Kirk.
This directive applies to all U.S. public buildings, military installations, embassies, and vessels. Private citizens, businesses, and organizations are encouraged to participate.
What This Means for You
If you are displaying the American flag at your home, business, school, or place of worship:
-
Lower the flag to half-staff on September 11 for Patriot Day.
-
Continue to keep the flag at half-staff through sunset, Sunday, September 14, 2025.
-
Always raise the flag briskly to the peak before lowering it slowly to half-staff.
Why This Matters
Half-staff observances are one of the highest marks of national respect. By following this guidance, you honor both the memory of those lost on September 11, 2001, and the individual recognized by this proclamation. Instructions for half-staff flying are here. If you can’t lower your flag use a black ribbon, good for future use such as Veterans Day as well.
If you can’t lower your flag a ribbon the length of the flag of black color is appropriate.
