What is the real meaning of the peace sign?

The peace symbol, often referred to as the “peace sign,” is an iconic symbol that has its origins in the 20th century and is closely associated with movements advocating for peace and nuclear disarmament. It was designed by British artist and activist Gerald Holtom in 1958.

Holtom created the peace symbol for use in the first Aldermaston March, a major anti-nuclear protest in the United Kingdom. The symbol is actually a combination of two semaphore flag signals. Semaphore is a system of sending messages using flags, and the two signals used are:

1. N – Semaphore signal for “N” involves holding two flags in a downward diagonal position, forming an inverted “V” shape.

2. D – Semaphore signal for “D” is created by holding one flag straight up and the other straight down, forming a vertical line and a horizontal line, respectively.

Gerald Holtom superimposed these two semaphore signals on top of each other within a circle. The result is the familiar peace symbol: a circle with three lines radiating from the center, forming an inverted “V” and a vertical line. This symbolizes the letters “N” and “D” from the semaphore alphabet, which stands for “Nuclear Disarmament.”

Over time, the peace symbol gained widespread recognition and became a universal emblem of peace and opposition to nuclear weapons. It has been adopted by various peace movements and is used globally to promote the idea of a world without war and nuclear arms. Today, it remains a powerful and enduring symbol of hope for a more peaceful and harmonious world.
