The Sicilian Revolution of 1848 was a major uprising against the rule of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, a Bourbon monarchy that controlled both Naples and Sicily.
The Kingdom of Sicily
- A Brief Existence: The Kingdom of Sicily existed for 16 months. During this time, the provisional government attempted reforms and drafted a new constitution.
- International Recognition: While seeking international support, few countries formally recognized the independent Sicilian state.
- Bourbon Counterattack: In May 1849, the Bourbon king, Ferdinand II, launched a massive military campaign to retake Sicily. Despite fierce resistance, the revolutionary forces were eventually overpowered.
